The Members of The Doors

The Doors were an American rock and roll band from the 1960′s, they were very controversial at the time for being part of the drug scene and because of the lead singers, Jim Morrison, behaviour on and off stage.Jim Morrison died in 1971 but The Door’s popularity continued to rise long afterwards and even today their CDs continue to sell with three of their albums, The Doors (1967), Strange Days (1967), and L.A. Woman (1971), being featured in the Rolling Stone list “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time”.

Their name comes from a line in William Blake’s poem The Marriage of Heaven and Hell; “If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite”. This love of poetry and use of beautiful lyrics to try and get people to open their imagination and grasp a full view of the world attracted most of their early fans.

The Doors – The End

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end
Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I’ll never look into your eyes…again
Can you picture what will be
So limitless and free
Desperately in need…of some…stranger’s hand
In a…desperate land
Lost in a Roman…wilderness of pain
And all the children are insane
All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain, yeah
There’s danger on the edge of town
Ride the King’s highway, baby
Weird scenes inside the gold mine
Ride the highway west, baby
Ride the snake, ride the snake
To the lake, the ancient lake, baby
The snake is long, seven miles
Ride the snake…he’s old, and his skin is cold
The west is the best
The west is the best
Get here, and we’ll do the rest
The blue bus is callin’ us
The blue bus is callin’ us
Driver, where you taken’ us
The killer awoke before dawn, he put his boots on
He took a face from the ancient gallery
And he walked on down the hall
He went into the room where his sister lived, and…then he
Paid a visit to his brother, and then he
He walked on down the hall, and
And he came to a door…and he looked inside
Father, yes son, I want to kill you
Mother…I want to…fuck you
C’mon baby, take a chance with us
C’mon baby, take a chance with us
C’mon baby, take a chance with us
And meet me at the back of the blue bus
Doin’ a blue rock
On a blue bus
Doin’ a blue rock
C’mon, yeah
Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill
This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end
It hurts to set you free
But you’ll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft lies
The end of nights we tried to die
This is the end
The Doors were started by a chance meeting between their front man, Jim Morrison and the keyboardist and vocalist, Ray Manzarek. They both discussed how they were writing and thinking about making great music. They soon found a guitarist in Robby Krieger and a drummer in John Densmore and their final lineup was completely. They released their first demo in 1966 and started playing regularly at clubs around Los Angeles.

They were fired from their gig due to a profanity filled version of the song The End but not before being discovered and signed by the record label “Elektra”. The first self titled album included most of their original music played on stage and became very well known for having a 12 minute version of the song “The End” which wasn’t great for radio but was well loved by the fans of the band.

Their first attempt at a single was the song “Break On Through (to the other side)”, it did not achieve great success on the radio though so a second try was made with the song “Light My Fire”. However, “Light My Fire” was over seven minutes long and not radio friendly so the producers cut it down to just a three minutes song. “Light My Fire” became The Doors first big hit and was the beginning of the band’s success.

The Doors – Light My Fire

You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn’t get much higher
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire
The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire, yeah
The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire, yeah
You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn’t get much higher
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire
After a successful live recording session at The Matrix Club in San Francisco was released under the name Live at the Matrix 1967, The Doors started making appearance on many American Variety TV shows. None of these appearances had a big effect until they appeared live on The Ed Sullivan Show, one of the most popular shows at the time.

On September 17th, 1967 The Doors made another appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show where they sang the song “Light My Fire” live, unfortunately the TV Station asked that they changed the words “Baby we can’t get much higher” to Baby we can’t get much better” due to “Higher” being used for drugs at the time. There are conflicting reports as to what happened, some say Jim Morrison was just nervous and forgot, others say he never planned on actually changing the lyric, but after agreeing to the change the song was sung without the change. Ed Sullivan, a very powerful man on TV at the time, was furious and canceled the next six planned appearances by The Doors on his show. Jim Morrison’s response was to question why it mattered because “Hey man. We just did the Sullivan Show!”

The Doors – People Are Strange

People are strange when you’re a stranger
Faces look ugly when you’re alone
Women seem wicked when you’re unwanted
Streets are uneven when you’re down
When you’re strange
Faces come out of the rain
When you’re strange
No one remembers your name
When you’re strange
When you’re strange
When you’re strange
People are strange when you’re a stranger
Faces look ugly when you’re alone
Women seem wicked when you’re unwanted
Streets are uneven when you’re down
When you’re strange
Faces come out of the rain
When you’re strange
No one remembers your name
When you’re strange
When you’re strange
When you’re strange
When you’re strange
Faces come out of the rain
When you’re strange
No one remembers your name
When you’re strange
When you’re strange
When you’re strange
Their second studio album was titled “Strange Days”, it had only mid-level financial success and the singles from the album never advanced as far as many had hoped and expected. It was also the first album where they used a person on the Bass Guitar instead of using they Keyboard bass as they found the Keyboard wasn’t as well suited for studio recording, all further albums followed this technique though for live performances they continued using the Keyboard for bass.

On December 9th, 1967, The Doors were playing in New Haven Connecticut in what became known as The New Haven Incident. Before the show began a Police Officer found Jim Morrison back stage kissing with a fan in a shower stall. The police officer did not recognize Jim Morrison and told them to leave, Morrison responded with “Eat it.” The police officer warned Morrison “Last chance” to which Morrison replied “Last chance to eat it.” The police officer pulled out a can of Mace and sprayed Morrison in the face, the show had to be delayed an hour while Morrison recovered. In the middle of the show Morrison stopped singing and proceeded to give a very obscenity-laced description of what happened to the audience. The police at the show proceeded to arrest Morrison on stage for public indecency and the fans at the show were furious and a riot broke out which spread into the streets of New Haven. Jim Morrison was the first American musician ever arrested during a concert though all charges were later dropped as there was no evidence of any crime.

The Doors – Hello, I love you

Hello, I love you
Won’t you tell me your name?
Hello, I love you
Let me jump in your game
Hello, I love you
Won’t you tell me your name?
Hello, I love you
Let me jump in your game

She’s walking down the street
Blind to every eye she meets
Do you think you’ll be the guy
To make the queen of the angels sigh?
Hello, I love you
Won’t you tell me your name?
Hello, I love you
Let me jump in your game
Hello, I love you
Won’t you tell me your name?
Hello, I love you
Let me jump in your game

She holds her head so high
Like a statue in the sky
Her arms are wicked, and her legs are long
When she moves my brain screams out this song

Sidewalk crouches at her feet
Like a dog that begs for something sweet
Do you hope to make her see, you fool?
Do you hope to pluck this dusky jewel?

Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello
I want you
Hello
I need my baby
Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello

Their third album, Waiting For the Sun, was released in April 1968, it was not such a commercial success and became more well known for the fact that the band was starting to have problems between each other. Most of the problems were being caused by Jim Morrison’s increasing use of alcohol and drugs and some of the incidents caused by his behaviour on and off stage. The single from this album was “Hello, I love you” and it was attacked by others as being very similar to a song called “All Day and All of the Night” released by The Kinks in 1964. Jim Morrison also did not really like the song and often refused to sing the lyrics in concert.

The Doors continued to tour successfully across the USA and Europe, though Morrison continued causing problems including passing out on stage after a long drug binge in Amsterdam. After returning to the USA they released another single which became a huge hit called “Touch Me” and continued performing sell out shows across the USA.

The Doors – Riders on the Storm

Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Into this house we’re born
Into this world we’re thrown
Like a dog without a bone
An actor out alone
Riders on the storm

There’s a killer on the road
His brain is squirmin’ like a toad
Take a long holiday
Let your children play
If ya give this man a ride
Sweet memory will die
Killer on the road, yeah
Girl ya gotta love your man
Girl ya gotta love your man
Take him by the hand
Make him understand
The world on you depends
Our life will never end
Gotta love your man, yeah

Yeah!

Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Into this house we’re born
Into this world we’re thrown
Like a dog without a bone
An actor out alone
Riders on the storm

Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm

Their fourth album, The Soft Parade, was widely criticized by critics and fans alike for leaving their original sound and trying to be too artistic. Morrison’s drinking and drug use caused many more conflicts in the band but despite all this the album was still a commercial success.

On March 1, 1969, the band was playing in Miami in what became one of their most controversial performances. Morrison decided to make his concert into a more of an art project, he continually antagonized the audience switching from asking for their love to belittling them and insulting them. The arena they were playing in was not air conditioned and it grew incredibly hot, Morrison was also very drunk and at one point stripped off his shirt while telling the audience to get naked, which many in the audience did. Morrison went too far when he put his shirt in front of his groin and, using his hand, made it appear he was showing the audience his genitals. The Miami police ordered Morrison’s arrest and he was sentenced to 6 months in prison and a $500 fine for public nudity and indecency.

The Doors – Roadhouse Blues

Yeah

Yeah, keep your eyes on the road, your hands upon the wheel
Keep your eyes on the road, your hands upon the wheel
Yeah, we’re goin’ to the Roadhouse
We’re gonna have a real
Good time

Yeah, back at the Roadhouse they got some bungalows
Yeah, back at the Roadhouse they got some bungalows
And that’s for the people
Who like to go down slow

Let it roll, baby, roll
Let it roll, baby, roll
Let it roll, baby, roll
Let it roll, all night long

Do it, honey, do it
You gotta roll, roll, roll
You gotta thrill my soul, all right
Roll, roll, roll, roll
Thrill my soul
You gotta beep a gunk a chucha
Honk konk konk
You gotta each you puna
Each ya bop a luba
Each yall bump a kechonk
Ease sum konk
Ya, ride

Ashen lady, Ashen lady
Give up your vows, give up your vows
Save our city, save our city
Right now

Well, I woke up this morning, I got myself a beer
Well, I woke up this morning, and I got myself a beer
The future’s uncertain, and the end is always near

Let it roll, baby, roll
Let it roll, baby, roll
Let it roll, baby, roll
Let it roll, all night long

Their fifth album, Morrison Hotel, went back to the sound of their roots with a much harsher and stronger Rock feel. It was called “Good hard, evil rock, and one of the best albums released this decade” and most well known as Jim Morrison’s return as the primary song writer. Throughout 1970 The Doors continue to perform on stage across the USA, on December 12, 1970 in New Orleans, Louisianan, Morrison had a break down on stage, destroyed the set and refused to finish the show. This was the last public performance of The Doors as the rest of the band decided Morrison should retire from performing due to his continued problems.

Their last album was LA Woman, it was their second best selling album and contained two top 20 hits. On March 13, 1971, Jim Morrison took a leave of absence from The Doors and moved to Paris with his long time companion Pamela Courson. He was hoping to start a career as a writer in Paris but he started drinking heavily and using many drugs. On July 3, 1971, Morrison was found dead in his bathtub by Courson, he died of an apparent heart failure at 27. The Doors continued to play for two more years never replacing Morrison but also never recovering from the loss. In 1973 The Doors disbanded with the remaining members going on to join other bands.

RIP Jim Morrison
(December 8, 1943 – July 3, 1971)

This band reminds me of a band from HK named Beyong. Similarly although the lead singer died, the band continued to rise long afterwards and even today their CDs are still on sale! The lead singer died because of an accident when holding a vocal concert in Japan in 1993. I think the reason why the band’s fame lasts until today is attributed to their songs which have the power to inspire ppl to move on when they feel depressed!
