Sports – Basketball

As I was contemplating what to write about next I realized I have missed one topic that is near and dear to almost every Chinese guy’s heart that I have met, basketball. So I decided to do some vocabulary for the sport so next time you are watching or playing the game, you can practice your English with these words!

Court – Ball – Net/Basket/Hoop – backboard – Forward (Small & Power) – Guard (Point & Shooting) – Center – Offense – Defense – Tip Off – Rebound – Jump Shot – Set Shot – Lay Up – Three Pointer – Slam Dunk – Dribbling – Pass (Chest, Bounce, Overhead & No Look) – Assist – Violation – Personal Foul – Technical Foul – Traveling – Double Dribble – Charging – Goaltending – Elbowing – Draft – Free Throw – MVP – Overtime – Possession – Referee – Shot Clock – Substitute – Box Out – Out of Bounds – Live Ball/Dead Ball – Double Team – Free Agent (Restricted/Unrestricted)

Court - The Basketball Court is the actual place you play the game. Usually it is a large rectangle with two nets at either end. On the ground are many lines with different purposes. The lines are labeled on the picture below.

Ball - The ball is of course the most important part of Basketball.

Net/Basket/Hoop & Backboard - Also vital to the game of Basketball, the basket is what you want the ball to go through and the backboard can be used to bounce the ball off of when putting the ball through the basket. The basket is also called the Hoop or the Net.

Positions: Forward (Small & Power) / Guard (Point & Shooting) / Center - There are five main positions in basketball, they have different jobs, strengths and weaknesses. Their general positioning during Offense drives is listed below.

Offense/Defense - The Offense is when you are attacking to get a basket and Defense is when you are defending your net to try and ensure the other team does not score.

Tip Off – The tip off is the start of the game, the two centers will line up at the center line and the referee will throw the ball straight up into the air, the two centers must jump up and try to knock the ball to one of their players.

Rebound - A rebound is what happens after the ball has been shot towards the net and missed, the players under the net will all jump up to try and get the rebound. A good rebound player has a great ability for ball control and is usually either really tall or can jump really well.

Jump Shot – A jump shot is a very popular style of shot where the shooter will plant their feet on the ground, bend their knees and spring their body up into the air, while in the air they will shoot the ball towards the net. This allows them to get more air and lets the shot go over the heads of those around them.

Set Shot – A set shot has mostly been replaced by the jump shot but is still used at times. Similar to the jump shot you will plant your feet on the ground, bend your knees and spring your body up, but usually your feet will not leave the ground during a set shot.

Lay Up – A layup is a basic technique for getting the ball into the net. It is when a player will drive towards the basket with the ball, take two steps while holding the ball and then jump up towards the basket, the ball is raised up and pushed towards the backboard to bounce off the back and into the net.

Three Pointer - A three pointer is when the shooter is standing outside the “three point circle” so that if the shot goes in the basket their team will get three points instead of the regular two points.

Slam Dunk – A slam dunk is when a player drives to the net, jumps up into the air and puts the ball directly into the net without shooting. It is a very popular method of scoring because it is very hard to stop as well it looks really good so everyone gets excited by them.

Dribbling – To dribble in basketball means to simply bounce the ball on the ground. When you move in basketball you must be dribbling the ball at all time or you will get called for a violation.

Pass (Chest, Bounce, Overhead & No Look) - A pass is how you move the ball from one player to another player. There are many types of passes but the four main ones are A)Chest Pass: Hold the ball with two hands at your chest, push the ball away from you and release it to throw it to the other player. B)Bounce Pass: Throw the ball in the direction of the other player but so that it hits the ground halfway between you and bounces off the ground and up to the other player. C)Overhead Pass: Hold the ball with two hands above your head and throw the ball with an arcing motion over your head. This allows you to throw the ball over defenders. D)No Look Pass: This is dangerous so it’s not recommended but if you get good at it, it can be very surprising and hard to defend against. Don’t look at the other person but still throw the ball to them.

Assist – Players will get an assist if they throw the ball to another team mate in a way that helps to setup the basket.

Violation – A violation is what happens when you break the rules. Generally the Referee will blow his whistle, tell everyone what the violation was using body language and then inflict the penalty on the offending team.

Personal Foul – A personal foul is any violation against another player that includes contact. Some common types of personal fouls are Charging, Blocking, Illegal screening, Holding and Elbowing.

Technical Foul - A technical foul is any violation which does not include contact between players. Some common types of technical fouls are Goaltending, Illegal Substitution and Delay of Game. Home team fans can even be assigned technical fouls for using excessive noise or throwing items, these fouls will go against the home team.

Traveling - Traveling happens when the player with the ball takes two steps without dribbling the ball at all. The ball is turned over to the other team.

Double Dribble - Double Dribble is when a player with the ball is dribbling the ball, stops and holds onto the ball, then tries to start dribbling again. Once you have stopped dribbling the ball you must throw the ball to another player before you can move again.

Charging/Blocking - Charging is what happens when a player with a ball tries to move forward and runs into a defender who has both feet placed firmly on the ground. Blocking is when a player on the defense has illegal contact with an opposing player which tries to stop the other player from moving forward.

Goaltending - Goaltending when you interfere with the ball when it is on its way to the basket and it is in its downward flight, entirely above the rim and has the possibility of entering the basket, and not touching the rim.

Elbowing – Elbowing is the illegal use of your elbow, when you throw your elbow around your body. It does not necessarily have to contact another person, though if it does it will often get an even more harsh penalty, often with the person in question being thrown out of the game.

Free Throw – A free throw is a common punishment when the defending team commits a foul against the offensive side while they are shooting the ball towards the basket. The player who was fouled stands at the free throw line and is allowed to take two set shots, each one worth one point. However, if they scored a basket while being fouled, the basket is allowed plus the player will get one free throw shot to score another point.

MVP - MVP stands for Most Valuable Player and is the player judged to have helped their team the most in a game or season.

Overtime – Overtime is what happens when at the end of the game the points are even and neither team has won. Different leagues have different rules but generally there will be one more shorter period played to try and decide the winner.

Possession – Possession just refers to whoever has control of the ball at any point in time. If I have the ball, I have possession. If you then take the ball from me, I have lost possession and you have gained possession.

Referee - The referee is the person who is in charge of deciding when a foul happens as well as keeping track of the time, the score and such things.

Shot Clock – The shot clock is a clock which times how long any team has had possession of the ball without shooting. Different leagues have different times allowed, but if the shot clock reaches 0 the team with the ball will lose possession.

Substitute – A substitute is a person who waits on the side line and if a player on the court is tired or not playing so well, their coach will call for a substitution and the player on the court will come off while one player from the side will take their place. most teams have what they call a “Sixth Man” which is the best substitute on the side, this is the person that most commonly is asked to go onto the court in a substitution.

Box Out – To box someone out you are the defender, the person you are defending has the ball and takes the shot. After they shoot, the defender should turn their back to the shooter bend their knees to be able to move easily and hold their arms out from their sides. Maintain contact with the shooter to keep them pinned behind you. In this way you can ensure that if the shot misses you are in a better position to rebound the ball than the shooter.

Out of Bounds – Out of Bounds is what happens when the ball touches the floor outside of the side or back lines or when the player with the ball allows their foot to touch the ground outside the playing area. If the ball or player goes out of bounds the play is immediately stopped, the ball is dead and the team which last touched the ball or had possession turns the ball over to the other team.

Live Ball/Dead Ball – A live ball is one that is still able to be dribbled, shot and scored with. A dead ball is one where the play has stopped due to a referee’s whistle and nothing may be done with the ball.

Double Team – A double team happens when one player on the opposing team is very good and the defending teams assigns two players to guard them instead of just one. This is a dangerous tactic though because it leaves only three players to defend the other four players. This is only useful if the other team is not very good except for one player, like if a high school team drafted Michael Jordan.

Draft – The draft happens at the beginning of the season. All the teams come together and take turns picking the new recruits for the up coming season. Generally the teams who had the worst record the last season pick first, unless the teams have traded their draft pick to other teams earlier.

Free Agent (Restricted/Unrestricted) - A free agent is a player which is allowed to accept offers for transfer from other teams. A restricted free agent is allowed to take offers for transfer from other teams but the team they are with now is allowed to match the offer and force the player to stay. An unrestricted free agent is one who is completely free to accept any offer and the team they were with before has no say in what happens.

This week’s question takes us into space! If we found an Earth-like planet which the leaders of Earth wanted to colonize, however it would take 120 years to travel to it by space ship, would you go? You would be leading a new scientific study for humanity and would be remembered throughout the future as the first human to leave Earth. However you would not be the one to step onto the new planet, your children’s, children would instead. As well you’d have to leave behind all family and friends.

So what would it be? Your answers can be up to 150 words in length and send them to ethan@ethansenglishcafe.com!

Just 120 years to go!

The real purpose of this is to get you guys some writing practice so please do take part if you want some free writing correction!

Personally,i can not accept that my privacy is not intimate just for fame. Maybe i can acheive wealth or embody my capability though giving up my right to privacy. However , if i really do like this ,i think i must ask myself what is important in my life and what do i seek all the time ? Needless to say, happiness is what i seek. I like freedom ,I know myself. Assuming that when i can not go where i want to or i can not talk what i want to ,just like someone who lose he legs and mouse .That is too serious and be scared , which i can not image . Everyone has its right to privacy which is sacred and inviolable .Being a star or a singer is not wrong , but now our mess media really made us sad. Many of them prefer to report negative news rather than postive news . That is too strange and bad .
That is my opinion.

English Correction:

Everyone has their own life and values.
Personally, I can not accept losing my privacy just for fame. Maybe I can become wealthy or reach my goals by giving up my right to privacy. However if I really did that, I must first ask myself what is most important in my life and what do I seek. Happiness is what I seek and I know myself and I know freedom makes me happy. If I can not go where I want to or talk about what I want to talk about it would be just like a person who has lost their legs and mouth. That is too scary to even consider for me. Everyone has their right to privacy which is sacred and inviolable. Being a famous star or singer is not a bad thing, but now our mass media has really become bad. Many of them prefer to report negative news rather than the positive, that is too strange and sad.

I would not give up my rights to privacy in order to become a rich movie star or singer. To those whose life are totally driven by materialism, they would probably do anything to become rich, including surrendering their privacy. But I am not that type of person. I admit I love money, but I also attach importance to family. If my privacy were deprived of, how would my family have their privacy? Plus, I don’t like acting or singing too much. I only do this for fun.

Personally I would not give up my privacy for fame or fortune, I love my privacy more than almost anything and I would find it very frustrating and annoying to have people follow me or bother me when eating food or out walking with friends. While I would love the fortune part so that I could travel everywhere and see the whole world the fame part would be annoying. I’ve often said that I would prefer to be rich enough that I’m not famous, like no one knows what the Rothechild family looks like even though they are probably the real richest people in the world.

Waltz with Bashir

The 1982 Lebanese civil war is probably not something you think a lot about, but this movie will definitely get you thinking. Waltz with Bashir is a documentary from the point of view of a soldier in the Israel Defense Force (IDF), it looks at his attempts to find memories of the Sabra and Shatila massacre which he witnessed. What makes this movie particularly striking is that it is done completely in a new type of animation where they combine Adobe Flash cutouts with classical animation.

The main character in the film is the director Ari Folman and it switches between him in modern times as a 40 year old man trying to remember and him as a 19 year old soldier in the war. It is made as a documentary and most of the characters you see are real though a few were created from people in his memory. It looks at many things, the most important being our actions during war and just what is acceptable and not acceptable to, not only society, but more importantly, to ourselves.

I was not sure what to expect going into this movie, it was a movie I had purchased quite a while ago and then forgotten about, I saw it last night and decided to give it a try and I’m still somewhat shocked by the whole experience. It’s a beautiful movie, the animation is just stunning, the musical soundtrack is beautiful and the story it tells is haunting. It is a slow moving movie, not a typical war movie with bullets flying everywhere, and that makes sense as it’s a movie about a man’s slow realization of his past and his possible complicity in an action that was unspeakably horrible.

I strongly recommend watching this movie if only to better understand the conflict that is still going on in the Middle East and why so many look at Israel’s past with horror. The movie is told from the point of view of an Israeli and many have criticized it as letting the IDF go too lightly for their actions, I would agree to an extent but I think anyone watching the movie can clearly see that what happened happened fully under the IDF’s watch and with their approval. The Lebanese civil war was a horrific time in the history of Lebanon and this movie makes that clear. I think the best way I can describe this movie is it’s like going to visit the Nanjing Massacre Museum, it’s depressing and horrifying, but necessary if you want to have an understanding of what happened and the horrors humans are all capable of.

I don’t want to say too much about it as I think it’s better if you just watch it and form your own ideas as to what is happening.

Canada: Sports

February 16th, 2012

When we win, we drink, when we lose, we drink.

Canada loves sports, however it’s important to remember that Canada also spends half the year in cold weather and a great deal of that, depending where you live, with snow on the ground. So Canada loves sports but our love of summer sports may not be as plentiful as our love of winter sports. As well, Canada’s most popular sport is not one countries who aren’t in the far north generally play.

A fun game to watch and play

Ice Hockey - By far the most popular sport in Canada, Ice Hockey has become one of two national sports in Canada. Ice Hockey in it’s current form was invented in Canada however it is based on many other stick and ball games played by the Native Americans, as well as a stick and ball game called culf, played by the Dutch. The first organized, indoor game of hockey was played in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on March 3, 1875. Nowadays when people think of Ice Hockey they tend to think of the National Hockey League (NHL) which is considered to be the highest level hockey league in the world. The NHL was started in Canada in 1919 with just four teams, two in Montreal, one in Ottawa and one in Toronto. 5 years later it expanded to the USA and the teams consisted of what are called the Original Six containing Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins, Chicago Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings and the New York Rangers. Today the league consists of 30 teams of which 7 are in Canada and 23 from the USA.

One of Canada's Heroes

Hockey in Canada is something that can’t be missed growing up there, every Saturday night on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) is Hockey Night in Canada, there are always two games shown on TV and it attracts millions of viewers all across the country. As Canada is very cold in the winter, the lakes and rivers usually freeze hard so in the winter it is not uncommon to see young people playing games of hockey outside across the country. In the summer people often play inside Ice Rinks or they take off their skates and instead play the game on the streets in their community.

This is what happens when Vancouver loses

Ice Hockey is probably one of the things Canada is most known for, especially as it’s one of the sports that Canadians tend to do very well in during international competitions like the Olympics. Ice Hockey also is something of a national passion and tempers will easily become hot when the topic comes up. Probably the best example to show just how insane some Canadians are about Hockey happened in 2011 when the Vancouver Canucks lost the Stanley Cup finals against the Boston Bruins. After the game had ended the fans poured into the streets and started rioting, burning cars and fighting with police, all of this simply because their team came in second and not first. The worst thing is that this is the second time this has happened in Vancouver. So if you go to Canada be respectful of the local team’s hockey club as you never know just how crazy the team’s fans really are.

This chaos is a sport

Lacrosse - Canada’s Summer National Sport, Lacrosse is another stick and ball game but this time it’s played on either grass or a hard indoor surface. The name is french for “The Stick” and it was originally created and played by the Native Americans in North America. The original game was played with hundreds of people on each side on a field sometimes more than 1 Kilometer in length. It was played as a religious festival and people viewed something similar to a ceremonial war to give honour to the master which lasted 2-3 days from sunrise to sunset.

Modern Day Lacross is simpler

Modern versions of the game are no longer so long or complex, once the game was made a more official sport in 1867, it was generally played outside on a grassy field. A group of people who owned indoor arenas decided to try and bring the sport inside to try to use it to make money during the summer and they created an indoor version called Box Lacrosse. Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in Canada right now and is rapidly increasing in popularity all across the globe.

Joe Carter wins the game

Baseball - Baseball is often thought of as America’s Past-time but it was actually created in England and was a variant of a British game called Rounders. As many Europeans immigrated to North America they brought the game with them and the modern version of what is known as Baseball was created in the USA. The first official game of modern baseball was played in Hoboken, New Jersey where the New York Nine beat the New York Knickerbockers 23-1 in 4 innings. The first official league for baseball was formed in 1867 with 16 clubs in the USA. Baseball has become very popular in North, South and Central America as well as in Japan and South Korea.

The baseball diamond

In modern times the Major League Baseball Association is the ruling body of professional baseball in North America, there are 30 clubs in total with 29 in the USA and only 1 in Canada. There used to be two Canadian teams but the Montreal Expos had money problems and the club was moved to the USA. I grew up loving the Toronto Blue Jays as I lived near the city and still remember 1992-93 for one important reason, the Toronto Blue Jays won the World Series of Baseball two years in a row. The second year in 1993 I remember sitting in my room watching Joe Carter hit a game winning home run and being so excited that my mom came downstairs to see what I was yelling about. Unfortunately the Toronto Blue Jays have never made it to the post season since.

Throwing the rock

Curling – Another sport that not a lot of countries have gotten into except the Northern countries, curling is a game of sliding a “rock” – a large, polished, heavy stone – down the ice to try and knock the other team’s rocks off the playing area and scoring points at the same time. Curling was thought to have been invented in Scotland in the 1500′s and was brought to Canada by the Scottish immigrants when Canada was being formed. While Curling is played in many countries it is probably strongest in Canada and the first official world curling championship was won by a Canadian team in 1959.

Try to get it closest to the center

Curling is a bit of a strange game with a lot more strategy involved than most people think from watching it. The rock is slid down the ice by one player, they must be careful to slide it at the proper speed as you don’t want it to slide to far. As well the rock will usually be twisted so it spins one way or the other to allow it to curve over the ice to get where it should go. Two other players on the team “sweep” in front of the rock to either make it move faster, slower or to try and move it in different directions. Whichever team’s rock is closest to the center of the painted circle gets the points.

Hit the guy with the ball!

Canadian Football - Not many people realize this but Canada actually has another form of football that is it’s own, it’s similar to the American version but different on a number of issues. Like American Football it is played with an oblong shaped ball which must be moved by the Offensive team down the field while the defensive team tries to stop them. Some of the differences are that the field is longer and you only have 3 “downs” or tries to get the ball 10 years instead of 4. This has led to a much faster style than in American football as throwing is more common than trying to run the ball.

He's going to get hurt.

Football was brought to North America by the British Army in around 1860 and the first official game of Football was played on November 9, 1861, at University College, University of Toronto. The Canadian Football League was founded on January 19, 1958 and currently holds eight teams with a new team expected to be added in 2012. The CFL tried to open an American division to try and broaden the appeal of the sport but was ultimately a failure due to the love of the National Football League in the USA.

Raptors lose again!

Basketball - Basketball was created by a Canadian man named James Naismith while he was teaching at what is now known as Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. It spread very quickly all over North America and today is still a very popular game in most of the continent. However Canada has never really fallen in love with the game to the same degree that the USA has, currently Canada has only one team in the National Basketball Association (NBA) which is the Toronto Raptors but they have never really showed much promise.

However when Canadians are young Basketball is a large part of our Physical Education classes and most schools and Universities have a Basketball team which compete at their own level.

Football or Soccer?

Soccer - Also known in most of the world as Football, Soccer is a popular past-time in Canada among all ages. Games involving kicking a ball around a field have been around for thousands of years with the oldest that we have proof of being Cuju in China at around 200-300 BC. However the modern rules of football were codified in the mid 19th century in England.

Canadian Soccer has always been popular and in fact Soccer has more registered players than any other sport in Canada. Canada has two teams, Toronto FC and the Vancouver Whitecaps, in Major League Soccer which is North America’s top soccer league. Despite all this Canada has never seen much success in soccer and the sport has remained mired in a middle ground where lots of people love to play it but not so many enjoy watching it.

I love Snowboarding!

Winter Sports – Canada has always had a love of Winter sports like Skiing, Snowboarding, Sleding and skating. Because of it’s cold, long winters, Canadian people tend to spend a lot of time playing these sports and enjoying the beautiful winter scenery as they do. Canada tends to do very well in the Winter Olympics but rarely does equally well in the Summer Olympics and as such, though Canada has hosted the Olympics three times, only once was it in the Summer (1976).

Other popular sports in Canada include Rugby, Cricket, Motorsport, Bowling, Golf, Cycling, Wrestling and Mixed Martial Arts

Valentine’s Day

February 14th, 2012
by Ethan

Every year on February 14, the men of the world must go out, buy over priced flowers and chocolates as gifts to show their partner just how much they love them. St. Valentine’s Day is here again. Valentine’s Day is a Christian holiday with the theme or love and romance, there are many stories as to the history behind Valentine’s Day and in this update we will look at the real history of the day.

History:

The name of the day comes from a Christian Saint who had the family name Valentine. Though in fact there wasn’t just one man named Valentine, there were fourteen different men. They were all killed at different times for their belief in Christianity, which at that time was not allowed, so the church felt these men were heroes of the religion and created a Saint in their honour. A Saint is a holy person who has shown great strength and courage in regards to his religion while alive, once they die the church makes them a saint which means they are essentially God’s helpers, people can pray to them for help. Though there were around fourteen different Valentine’s killed no one is completely sure anymore exactly which of the men is the saint.

So the question becomes why did he become the saint of lovers. In fact there is no real historical reason for it, the association of Valentine with romance started around 1000 AD. If you ask the Christian Church nowadays they will tell you a story of a man named Valentine, however the story is not actually true, but it’s a nice story anyway so let’s listen.

Claudius II - Valentine's Antagonist

At around 269 AD there was a Roman Emperor named Claudius II, he wanted to go to war with his enemies but he was worried because his army wasn’t big enough and not enough young men were joining anymore. To help boost his army he banned the marriage of young men as men with a family don’t like to join war but single men are more like to help fight. However there was a Christian Priest named Valentine who, even after marriage was banned by the Emperor, kept on secretly marrying young men and women because he felt it was what God wanted. Later the Emperor found out what was happening and had the priest tortured and killed but for his efforts, the church made the priest into a Saint.

Again, I should point out nothing I wrote above is fact and there is almost no mention of any of this in any historical document. But it’s still a nice story I guess so people like to repeat it as the reason behind the holiday.

Symbols:

There are a few symbols of this holiday, most have to do with romance and love of course, so let’s look at what they are.

A Valentine's Day Card

Heart: Of course the most common symbol is the heart, heart shaped boxes of chocolates, hearts shaped cards, heart shaped candy, hearts, hearts and more hearts. Hearts obviously represent love so this is the main symbol of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day Card: Much like any holiday’s cards, a Valentine’s Day card is just a piece of paper where you write your good wishes to the other person on. Often the cards you can buy at the story have a little poem on them to show romance such as:

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Sugar is sweet
And so are you

As well they will usually end the card with the words “Will you be my Valentine?” which means you want them to be your special person for that day.

Cupid and his bow

Cupid: Cupid is actually a God of Rome and not Christianity but St. Valentine’s Day has also adopted him as a symbol of love. Cupid is the Roman God of desire and love, he is usually shown with a bow and arrow in his hands and it’s said that if Cupid shoots you with his arrow you will fall in love with the person you are with. Though Cupid is now often shown as a child, he originally was just a young man and was usually shown naked.

Chocolates: Chocolates are one of the very common gifts on Valentine’s Day and most chocolate companies make special heart shaped boxes especially for this day.

Rose: Roses are the flowers of love so of course they are the most common flower to give to your lover on Valentine’s Day. This of course has led to a huge increase in the price of roses on this day which seems somewhat cruel.

Birds: Not just any birds but two types in particular, Doves and Love Birds. Doves represent purity and innocence as everyone wants to believe their lover is pure and innocent. Love Birds are a type of parrot which is known for it’s strong bond with it’s lover.

Activities:

Love Birds are cute

There aren’t really any specific activities set aside for this day, usually the male will take his partner out for a date, usually a romantic dinner. As well one should give their lover a gift of some sort, the most common are chocolates and flowers but it’s up to you what you’d like to give.

In schools on Valentine’s Day children will take part in a Valentine’s Day card exchange, this is when you make or buy many Valentine’s Day Cards and give them out to your friends and classmates. It used to be that you gave them out to those who were close to you but many schools now insist that you should give everyone in your class one equally because they felt that it was cruel that some students got many cards while some students only got a few.
